Anxiety may feel like a lifelong companion, it may show up in certain season, or it may be a response to trauma. Through counseling, I help clients who are experiencing anxiety identify some of the underlying thought patterns and beliefs that are contributing to their distress, while also processing past experiences that may be keeping them stuck.
I've personally experienced anxiety at different times throughout my life so I know how debilitating it can feel. I often find myself working harder or pushing my emotions to the side when I am feeling anxious, which typically keeps me stuck in an anxious state. Counseling has helped me identify underlying beliefs and assumptions I have about the world that often contribute to my feelings of anxiousness. Understanding myself and the lens I look through to engage with the world has taught me when to utilize calming strategies and relaxation techniques and how to ride the wave of the emotions I am experiencing, rather than pushing them aside.
I enjoy helping my clients figure out how to combat anxiety in their own life while also providing psychoeducation for different causes of anxiety, and the biological role of the brain in anxiety. I want my clients to feel empowered that they don't have to feel stuck when experiencing anxiety and can develop tools and strategies to effectively manage their symptoms.
I often utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help my clients not only address their symptoms of anxiety, but identify thoughts, assumptions, or beliefs that may be contributing to their distress. I work cooperatively with my clients to modify thought patterns that may be causing harm while also providing tools and resources to reduce the impact of anxiety on their everyday life.
